What's It About?

As its 63rd Annual Broadway Production the Society staged the Ontario Premiere of “The Melody Lingers On”: The Songs of Irving Berlin.

The play is a fascinating look at the life of Irving Berlin. The show is based upon the memoirs of his daughter, and features Berlin Classics like “There's No Business Like Show Business”, “Blue Skies”, “Always”, “Easter Parade”, “White Christmas”, “Alexander's Ragtime Band”, “God Bless America”, “Puttin' On The Ritz”, “Count Your Blessings”, and many more.

Irving Berlin was an intimate friend of Ethel Merman, Fred Astaire and Jerome Kern who said “Irving Berlin has no place in American Music – he is American Music.”

Berlin was a Russian immigrant who began his career in music as a singing waiter at a saloon on the Bowery. Lost his first wife to Typhoid Fever after their honeymoon and his only son in a crib death on Christmas Day. A poor cantor's son who fell in love with an heiress, shunned by her father, elopes...all told with dialogue and music and dances of all kind.

The life of Irving Berlin spans over 100 years and had many “ups and downs.” In “The Melody Lingers On”, it is all played out using his own fabulous music. From Tin Pan Alley to the bright lights of Broadway, from Hollywood to tours of duty throughout Europe and the Pacific, the story, and this musical, is the story of this American century.
